As part of the development of a new district heating network in the City of Lugano, plans call for the construction of the Gemmo district heating plant, equipped with heat pumps designed to cover approximately 80% of the network’s heating demand. The heat source for the heat pumps consists of the drinking water reservoirs adjacent to the plant. Since drinking water cannot be used directly as the heat transfer fluid for the heat pumps, heat transfer occurs via an intermediate circuit that uses CO₂ as the heat transfer fluid on the evaporator side.
