The project comprises the retrofit of approximately 4,425m² of the original 1972 building and forms part of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) funded Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation Pathfinder Project (EEDPP2). The works include building fabric upgrades, roof and window replacement, ventilation improvements, lighting and controls upgrades, and the installation of a medium-temperature air-source heat pump, with existing gas boilers retained for peak demand and backup. The project aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, extend the building's operational life, enhance occupant comfort, increase the use of renewable technologies, and achieve a minimum B1 BER rating. The existing building is a reinforced concrete framed structure currently served by the campus central heating system and a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation systems.
