Der Streckenabschnitt Frankfurt-Höchst (a) – Mainz-Kastel auf der nordmainischen Strecke zwischen Frankfurt und Wiesbaden (VzG-Strecke 3603) sowie die freie Strecke Abzweig Kaiserbrücke Ost – Abzweig Kostheim – Mainz-Bischofsheim auf der Mainzer Umgehungsbahn (VzG-Strecke 3525) und die freie Strecke Abzw Kostheim – Abzw Kostheim Ost (VzG-Strecke 3531) sollen auf ESTW-Technik umgestellt werden. Dies ist aufgrund der Schnittstelle zwischen Kostheim und Mainz-Bischofsheim eine technische Voraussetzung für die Inbetriebnahme eines digitalen Stellwerks (DSTW) im Netzbezirk Mainz, das mit der bestehenden Anlage in Kostheim und dem geplanten DSTW nicht herstellbar ist. Die vorhandenen Drucktastenstellwerke der Bahnhöfe Flörsheim (DrS 2, Inbetriebnahme 1963), Hochheim (DrS 2, Inbetriebnahme 1954), Kostheim (DrS, Inbetriebnahme 1959) und Mainz-Kastel (DrS 2, Inbetriebnahme 1960) sowie die Blockstelle Eddersheim (Einheit MW, Inbetriebnahme 1950) sind zudem technisch abgängig und erneuerungsbedürftig
