The enhancement of accessibility and interconnectivity for people walking, wheeling and cycling within this network is anticipated to play a pivotal role in mitigating carbon emissions originating from transport activities. The council’s objective is to augment the existing 40km network into a seamlessly connected 314km network spanning the entire city. The Dodder Greenway Milltown Road - Dodder walk to Dundrum Road Active Travel Scheme is one of the projects identified under this initiative. The Dodder Greenway Milltown Road - Dodder walk to Dundrum Road Active Travel Scheme extends along Milltown Road between Dodder walk and Dundrum Road for a length of 1.2km. The Scheme includes the provision of segregated cycle facilities, improved pedestrian facilities (footpath and junction upgrades), ducting, resurfacing etc. the scheme also includes the upgrade of two signal-controlled junctions to improve pedestrian and cyclist facilities, the two junctions are: Milltown Rd and Churchtown Rd junction and Milltown Rd and Dundrum Rd junction. The tunnel is located on county road 49 in Samnanger municipality, between Eikedalen and Bjørkheim. The tunnel has a length of 665 metres and one annual daily traffic (ÅDT) of 2831 vehicles (2023), of which 15% are heavy transport. It is classified in tunnel class B, signposted height 4.2 metres. The speed limit in the tunnel is 80 km/h. It has approx. 6% falls in the direction of Bjørkheim. The tunnel was opened to traffic in 1976. The upgrading mainly includes replacing and modernising electrical and technical control installations, the establishment of a new technical building in the open air, a new drainage and surface water system, as well as new railings both in the tunnel and in the open air zone. The completed upgraded tunnel shall have a lane width of 3.10 metres and the sign height of 4.2 metres, as well as the shoulder against the guide edge shall be 0.5 metres.
